Age is just a number for a White Rock area couple whose wedding was featured in the New York Times this weekend.
Karen Soltero married a man who is 16 years younger than her at a the Royal Oaks Country Club on July 13.
Soltero met 28-year-old Andres Peña while they were both at work events in Georgia for the Masters Tournament. At first, she was unsure of her feelings. Not only because of the man bun, but because Peña happens to have the same surname as that of her sister’s murderer. The two took her husband’s mother’s maiden name, Castaño, when they married.
Soltero’s journey to find love was fraught with obstacles. In 2013, she contracted a flesh-eating bacteria, and doctors almost had to amputate her leg to save her life. Four years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy, according to the New York Times.
Now, the couple is looking toward the future and are both eager to have children.
The couple spent their three-week honeymoon on the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini, then headed to Cape Town and Zimbabwe for a friend’s wedding.
