An early-morning torch run from Lakewood to Norbuck Park will kick off the first ever White Rock Spring Games Saturday, May 19.

Seven neighborhood schools, public and private, are collaborating on the daylong games, which are open to students in grades 1-8. A group of dads at St. John’s Episcopal School came up with the idea to put on the field day as a fundraiser. The schools — St. John’s, St. Thomas Aquinas, Lakewood Elementary, Hexter, Lakehill Prep, J.L. Long and Stonewall Jackson — will split the proceeds from registration fees, T-shirt and food sales and sponsorships.

Teams of four can register for $100 online at whiterockgames.com to compete in footraces, a soccer shootout, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a three-legged race and more. Individual students can register for open events, $25 per student, including a Wiffle Ball home-run derby, in advance or on the day of the games.

Participation in the torch run costs $50 per 1/8-mile.

Spring games spokeswoman Pam Zeko says the community has been enthusiastic about the event so far. She asked former Dallas Mavericks player Rolando Blackman to light the torch, and he agreed not only to that, but to participate in events the whole day.

“Pardon the pun, but this idea has really caught fire,” she says.
