In addition to dredging the lake, portions of White Rock Lake park are scheduled to receive needed repairs.

Later this month, construction will begin on the building at Winfrey Point, says Willis Winters, superintendent of Planning, Design and Construction for the Park Department.

The building, which is rented for parties and meetings, is outdated and will receive a new kitchen, structural repairs and updated electrical wiring, Winters says.

The $137,000 for the project is being funded by proceeds from the 1985 bond program, Willis says.

Another project is to re-do a small portion of the park according to the department’s master design plan. The plan was developed several years ago and includes a re-paved hike and bike trail, new furniture and landscaping.

The department hasn’t had the money to implement the entire plan, but Park Department officials have decided to update a small stretch of the park at Winfrey Point, Willis says.

The hike and bike trail will be rebuilt, and a new parking lot will be added, as well as new park furniture. Willis says the renovation will be on a small scale, but it will give a preview of what the entire park would look like if redone.

Another project is to re-pave East Lawther, which is in poor shape, Willis says.

In the ’95 bond program, which passed in May, $900,000 was allocated for the project. The Park Department plans to re-do East Lawther with concrete to make the street more accessible to bikers and runners, Willis says.
