I love home tours, so it’s fortuitous that I live in this neighborhood. The Hollywood Home Tour is coming up in a couple of weeks, followed closely by the Swiss Avenue home tour on Mother’s Day weekend, then of course there’s the Lakewood and Junius Heights tours in the fall … and so on.

But I have to admit, out of all of the neighborhood home tours, my favorite is the White Rock Home Tour taking place this weekend. Though I love traipsing through historic homes and imagining what early 20th century life was like in Dallas, or peeking into the darling Tudors in Hollywood/Santa Monica, or admiring the impressive decor in Lakewood homes, still, I definitely have a weakness for mid-century modern and contemporary architecture.

And the White Rock Home Tour focuses solely on these types of homes. This year’s tour features five homes right around White Rock Lake (and Hexter Elementary, for which the home tour raises funds) plus meet-and-greets with a few of the homes’ architects at specific times on Saturday and Sunday. There’s also a speaker reception featuring neighborhood architect Cliff Welch (we’ve written about his house in our magazine, plus some of his other designs, including the new Enclave on Northcliff) at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Design Within Reach on McKinney. Welch will speak on “Modernism Then and Now: the influences of post-war residential architecture”. Space is limited to 150, and reservations are required.

Tour tickets are $10 (get them at Green Spot, White Rock Coffee or specific Tom Thumbs) or $15 at the door on tour days. Or if you want free tickets, watch our Facebook page all day Friday for White Rock Home Tour ticket giveaways.
