Former councilman, current neighborhood activist and sometime Back Talk commenter Veletta Forsythe Lill looks to be getting back in the middle of city-related things again — as if she ever left — as the Observer reports she has been named the city’s developing downtown Arts District coordinator by Mayor Tom Leppert. Lill has long been active in the city’s arts scene, and although I can’t say I always agree with her politically (hint: Trinity toll road), it’s hard to find a more passionate advocate for the city than Veletta. And she has a lot to work with in the Arts District: With all of the construction going on along Ross Avenue, that portion of the city has literally been transformed, almost overnight, from a pretty rag-tag corner to one of the shiniest and sleekest things going. My only complaint: The Field of Dreams softball field right in the southwest armpit of Woodall Rogers Freeway became a casualty of the construction. That was the scene for me of many an Advocate (and before that, DMN) softball team loss, but also many good times. But I guess moving our team to another league is a small price to pay for the progress going on there now.
