Here’s a quick look at what city council members will discuss Wednesday, regarding Lakewood and East Dallas.

The council will hold a public hearing on creating the University Crossing Public Improvement District for the area bound by North Central, Lovers, Mockingbird and Greenville, including the new residential/retail area on SMU Boulevard. A PID allows the property owners to pay a supplemental assessment with their taxes to help fund additional public services beyond what the city provides. That includes things like extra security and landscaping.

We may have a new piece of public art at the Dallas Arboretum. A sculpture design has been approved by the Public Art and Cultural Affairs committees. The council just needs to authorize a contract with the studio, Legge Lewis Legge LLC, which would begin building the sculpture next month, installing it by February 2014. It’s paid for in the 2006 bond program.

An item of more general interest affects the Trinity River Corridor Project. Someone may have to save the threatened mussels that call the Trinity River home. With guidance from Texas Parks & Wildlife, the native, freshwater mussels might have to be relocated. The council will vote on whether to spend $147,512 for Halff Associates Inc. to investigate what could become a costly issue.
