Demolition of the former Trinity Lutheran Church on Gaston at Loving started late last week, and Linda Morash of the White Rock YMCA created the above slideshow of demolition photos. The new White Rock Y will break ground on the site next Friday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.

The future building design is 37,485 square feet, compared to roughly 42,000 square feet in its former building across Gaston. (The temporary location on Gaston between Tucker and East Grand affords 16,000 square feet.)

To date, the White Rock Y has $8.3 million in fundraising and pledges for the new building, says board chairwoman Alise Cortez. That figure falls short of the $10.5 million in pledges needed to start construction on the back section of the new building, including the indoor and outdoor pools.

To build everything would ultimately cost an estimated $13 million. Cortez says the Y is still searching for “large legacy donors,” and another informational meeting will be held two days after the groundbreaking. The White Rock Y expects to be moved to the new building by September 2014.
