According to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation, the switch began after 8 p.m. Friday.

By Saturday afternoon, east and westbound Gaston Avenue traffic will be pushed to the outside lanes north of the road’s intersection with SH 78 (Garland Road/Grand Avenue) through the work zone. One lane on Gaston will be open in each direction until further notice.

This will allow crews to work on the inside lanes.

Cars moving onto Gaston from SH 78 will have new access points, according to the release.

There will also be changes to traffic signal timing, including short periods of red flashing lights.

The Advocate reported in January that this change was coming, along with news that the project had been delayed. Previously, TxDOT expected to finish the intersection reconfiguration this spring, but weather incidents slowed progress, a TxDOT public information officer said at the time, pushing the completion date to late summer or early fall.

The most recent update from TxDOT says the project is planned to be finished in the fall.

Construction on the $6.3 million project to reconfigure the intersection began December 2021. The goal is to provide safer turning movements and more efficient through-lanes on SH 78 and create new access points for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the intersection.

Changes are also planned for the rest of the Gaston Avenue corridor, part of a Dallas Department of Transportation project.
