This Saturday, see the art exhibit “Remnant,” which features new work by Dallas-based artists Erika Jaeggli and Sonali Khatti, who are both mixed-media artists who work with actual and metaphorical remnants. Khatti embeds remnants of fabric and uses photos from her own past as reference. Jaeggli paints allegorical landscapes using remnants of newspaper as her canvas and uses trees as metaphors for the human condition. The exhibition opens May 4 at Janette Kennedy Gallery at 1409 South Lamar, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

BLACK’S Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge is hosting it’s annual Hats & Horses derby party Saturday, May 4 and it’s annual Cinco De Mayo celebration Sunday, May 5. Celebrate this year’s Kentucky Derby in style by drinking mint juleps, participating in a “best hat” contest, or eating and listening to live music at J. BLACK’S. Both events start at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the day at 2409 North Henderson Avenue. General entry is free.

Screen Shot 2013-04-30 at 10.53.22 AMStonewall Jackson Elementary School is hosting their fourth annual Peep at the Coops urban chicken-coop tour this weekend. The tour, on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., is headquartered at Stonewall Jackson Elementary and benefits Stonewall Gardens, the hands-on science program housed in the outdoor laboratory. A dozen coops in East Dallas will be featured this year, ranging from coops at local businesses to brand new elementary school coops to backyard coops. Coop Tour Maps are available for $5.00 at Stonewall Gardens. The tour is self-guided, and visitors can tour the coops in any order throughout the afternoon.

Love our Native Plants and Prairies Day is Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake. Hosted by the North Texas Master Naturalists, the event includes activities for kids (such as making seed balls and cornhusk dolls) around the picnic tables on the north side of the Bath House. Also, Twice Upon a Time storytellers will be there along with Captain Chrysalis, superhero entomologist. And it’s free.

Later today, join local artists Ken and Maureen Womack from 6:30-8 p.m. at the “Icons of Dallas” art reception. Host Gaedeke Group will unveil three unique paintings from the Womacks highlighting “new icons of the Dallas skyline.” Visitors will enjoy live music from the Booker T. Washington High School jazz quartet and food and drink from local artisans. The reception will be held in the CBS Radio building lobby located at 4131 N. Central Expressway. Free.

In honor of National Public Gardens Day on May 10, the Dallas Arboretum is hosting an essay contest for all Dallas area first through eighth graders. The prompt is “Why is a public garden, like the Dallas Arboretum, important for Dallas?” Essays must be submitted online or by mail by 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 5.
