Mark it down as official just a few minutes ago, around 9:30 p.m. Monday: "The Secret Garden" will be Woodrow Wilson High School’s spring musical production.

The announcement was made by Woodrow’s musical directors, John Beaird and Sean Morrison, at the conclusion of the school’s annual "mini school" that brings together parents, students, teachers and administrators to let parents meet teachers and get the hang of their students’ schedules. I’m only familiar with "Garden" by name, but it was described at the meeting as being along the lines of "Les Miserables", a musical put on by Woodrow students a few years ago. According to online sources, the book on which the play is based was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett and first published in 1909; Wikipedia says the book "is now considered a classic of children’s literature."

According to the online summary, an outbreak of cholera makes the character Mary Lennox an orphan, and she’s sent to live at Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire, England. A stern housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, is left in charge of the girl, and the play unfolds from there. Wikipedia says the "major themes" of the play are "the healing powers of the mind" as well as "the concepts of New Thought and theosophy."

Sounds kind of heavy, which I’m sure will delight some parents and students and annoy others. Feel free to add some plot clarification here if you have some expertise or knowledge.
