The Texas Legislature convenes next week, and somewhere amid the hundreds of bills, animal advocates expect a proposal to ban pit bulls in Texas.

We first heard about this during an interview with Forest Hills neighbor Paige Anderson who runs an animal talent agency called Beast. Anderson volunteers with pet rescue organizations, and she often fosters homeless dogs. She owns pit bulls, including the guy in this picture.

An East Texas family is pushing for the pit-bull ban after a 2-year-old Van County girl was mauled by a chained pit bull on Halloween. The Van City Council has considered banning the breed in an ordinance similar to the one approved in Denver six years ago. That ordinance requires pit bull owners to move or have their pets euthanized.

But Anderson and other animal advocates say the bill unfairly targets a breed of dog rather than pet owners who don’t care for their pets. She points to the fact that the dog that attacked the girl in East Texas was tethered.

“Any dog can be dangerous in that situation,” she says.
