Looks as if the so-called “battle over custody of the collective memories of this most outré club in Dallas history” has been decided.

The Woodall group led by Starck Club founder Blake Woodall has signed a production agreement with Sundance director/producer (AFI film guy) Michael Cain,Wade Randolph Hampton (the N9NE group spokesperson) and, Melina McKinnon, which  gives Cain, Hampton and McKinnon full rights to the story and an archive including hundreds of hours of rare footage, thousands of photos and memorabilia surrounding the legendary Starck Club, of which I have heard much lore. (Though I was still a young-un in the 80s, kids often told tales of decadence, dance, celebrity, and these magical pills called Ecstasy that were there for the taking … )

Some controversy could potentially arise out of the deal, according to this April 30 story by Alan Peppard at the DMN. Apparently a former Starck Club waiter, who already screened a documentary with a plotline very similar to a movie I once saw about Studio 54, wanted the Starck Club story exclusive. 

Cain will take a 2-month sabbatical from his duties as Artistic Director of the AFI Dallas International Film Festival, so he “can focus [his] efforts on this project during this critical time.

Next Tuesday, May 12, the 25 anniversary of the Starck Club opening, Woodall will ceremoniously hand over the footage to the moviemakers during a media reception at the club’s old location on McKinney Avenue.
