Since it’s National Public Gardens Day, I thought I would show you this vegetable garden that some Old East Dallas neighbors put in last year. This used to be a weedy abandoned lot that attracted trash and high grass tickets. So some of the neighbors, all gardening enthusiasts, asked the owners if they could put in a garden. They rented a backhoe to even the earth and created an irrigation system. When the grass gets high, one guy gets out there and cuts it with a push mower. The first year, they planted squash, tomatoes, and some interesting stuff like okra and cotton, which was just for fun. Now they’re on their third crop, which includes green beans, sugar beets, onions, lettuce, peas and sunflowers. It gets more beautiful with every season.
