As recently as two years ago, Mark Lovvorn was persona non-grata among the city’s historic preservationists after he bought Stanley Marcus’ former Lakewood home on Nonesuch and then announced plans to tear it down (click here and here and here for Back Talk archives story on the issue). But after lots of public pressure, much of it coming from the Dallas Observer and Robert Wilonsky, Lovvorn appeared to reluctantly backed down from his teardown plans. Today, though, after the city approved the 1938 home’s historic designation, Lovvorn ruminated to the DMN that even though he was figuratively dragged behind a pickup to get to this point, he’s glad things worked out the way they did. As part of the agreement, according to the DMN, Lovvorn can’t alter the original home’s exterior, but he can whittle away at the interior at will and he can demolish other structures on the property.
