Thanks to some investigative historical work by a few SMU students, the history of St. Matthew’s Cathedral on Ross Avenue near Lower Greenville is now a little more clear. A story in the DMN tells how the SMU students in a “Latino/Latina Religions” class discovered a few interesting tidbits about the longtime neighborhood landmark. Among them: Former first lady and LBJ wife Lady Bird Johnson attended an Episcopal college for “young women of wealth and privilege” in a portion of the structure. Something else the students discovered: Former Episcopal bishop C. Avery Mason’s written eight-point plan to deal with racial tensions in the area. The last point is interesting because St. Matthew’s is now home to a flourishing Spanish-language congregation along with its traditional English service.
