Members of the Stonewall Jackson Elementary community are protesting residential development that could add  some 778 families to the Stonewall attendance area, according to an email sent out tonight by the Stonewall Parent-Teacher Association.

In the proposed location at 4662 Amesbury there currently are 472 two-story apartments on 19 acres next to single-family homes and two-story condos, housing about 30 Stonewall students at this time.

The planning and zoning committee has approved a zoning variance to allow the construction of 1,250 to 1,396 apartments in several three- to five-story apartment towers.

The proposal is on the city council agenda for Oct. 26. The Stonewall PTA is asking the neighborhood to join them in protesting the plan which they say would not only affect the school, but also would “cause traffic and safety concerns less than one mile from the school”.

Anyone who has an opinion on the issue can contact Angela Hunt, the city councilperson over the district in question.
