Sam’s Club Now on Lower Greenville may not look busy, but company officials say the store’s first year has been a success — especially in the innovation that has enhanced the shopping experience at other Sam’s Club stores, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Last year, the former Walmart Neighborhood Market was transformed into a digital shopping laboratory that tests technology capable of creating automatic shopping lists, augmenting reality and more. The store is open to the public, but unlike traditional stores, shoppers use the Scan & Go app to scan items in their cart and pay using their phones.

The innovation occurring at the Lower Greenville location has helped engineers at the Sam’s innovation center in downtown Dallas create new digital features that benefit customers and employees nationwide.

Sam’s Club Now is helping engineers complete Item Vision technology, which will add bulky items to the digital shopping cart on the Scan & Go app without customers having to find the barcode. Other additions to the app include the ability to purchase alcoholic beverages nationwide and see past receipts, according to the Morning News.

Engineers have also created the Ask Sam platform, which allows employees to see work schedules, help customers find items and search other stores’ inventory through an iPad.

Sam’s announced it was creating a Sam’s Club Now after Amazon Go’s cashier-less store made headlines. Dallas was chosen as the location because it has 24 clubs in the area and a large number of members and employees, the Morning News reported.
