The eighth annual Ride of Silence, honoring cyclists killed in crashes with cars, is Wednesday at 7 p.m. The 10-mile ride around White Rock Lake starts on the west side of the lake at the boat launch parking lot.

Cyclist Chris Phelan started the Ride of Silence in 2003 to honor his friend, Larry Schwartz, who was killed by a bus mirror. The ride has grown every year to include other cities, and this year it’s happening in 282 cities around the world, from Toronto to Aukland.
