On the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the 7200 block of East Mockingbird Lane, a fatal single-vehicle crash resulted in three deaths, Dallas Police said. After the vehicle lost control while speeding, running into a tree, residents asked the question, “When will the city implement speeding control measures?”

Although, no other vehicles or residences were involved in this accident. Residents believe car accidents in their neighborhood occur “too often.”

“This incident is not an isolated one. There have been numerous accidents and several fatalities due to the lack of traffic control measures between Buckner Road and Greentree Lane,” resident Yuri Strain, who started the petition, said on the website. “This stretch of road has become notorious for speeding due to the significant distance between existing traffic lights. The installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Dalewood Lane would significantly reduce these incidents by controlling vehicle speeds and improving overall road safety.”

The petition immediately started the same day as the accident, and has received 357 signatures since. With 143 signatures left to reach their goal, neighbors continue to add pressure for immediate action.

“I live on Mockingbird Lane just a few houses west of where these accidents are occurring,” resident Nancy Harsh, who lives west of where the accident said under the reasons for signing. “Something needs to be done to ensure homeowners, as well as drivers, are safe.”

Harsh mentioned a similar car accident that involved an off-duty police officer occurred in 2019 in the 7200 block of East Mockingbird Lane. The officer, who hit a tree after losing control of the vehicle, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Barry Martin-Pautz, a nearby resident who lives on Dalewood Lane, also signed the petition. She said the speeding down mockingbird is a “nightmare.”
