Coming up is the 2015 Tim Brown Woodrow Wilson Golf Tournament. The event will be special this year because not only will it raise money to support athletics at Woodrow Wilson High School, but it will also celebrate Tim Brown’s recent election to the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Brown was a standout player at Woodrow in the 1980’s who went on to win a Heisman Trophy in 1987 at Notre Dame before his Hall of Fame career in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. “Despite all of his success and accolades, he hasn’t forgotten his roots,” says neighbor Christopher Kurzner, a spokesperson for the event. “He’s been a solid supporter of Woodrow and its athletics program and continues to do so by hosting this tournament and helping in other ways year-in, year-out.”

(Sidenote: Woodrow is the only public school to have two Heisman Trophy winners — Tim Brown and Davey O’Brien (TCU, 1938). Only 3 schools have multiple winners: Woodrow, Mater Dei and Fork Union Military Academy.)

In addition to Brown hosting and playing in the tournament, Blazing Saddles actor Burton “Bubba” Gilliam, also a Woodrow grad, will be playing again. Read Advocate’s story about Gilliam from way back in 1999.

The event is coming up on May 4, so register now. Sign up as a team of four or sign up individually to be matched with others. Find prices and details on the event website. Also learn more on the Facebook event page.
