More than 30 teens sparkled in colorful dresses Saturday as they walked the runway at the Dallas Arboretum’s second annual quinceañera fashion show to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Participants, chosen by an advisory committee based on a written essay, showcased their dresses with full, ruffled skirts at Rosine Hall and told the audience about their future plans and favorite traditions.
Adriana Lopez, host of Telemundo’s daily show, Acceso Total, emceed the show.
“The Dallas Arboretum serves as a beautiful backdrop for these lovely young ladies getting their photos taken throughout the year in their colorful dresses, yet many of us are not familiar with the customs of a quinceañera,” said Arboretum board chairman Alan Walne. “By highlighting them as they prepare to celebrate their quinceañera, we will learn more about this tradition and their personal stories during this special coming of age moment.”
Several Spanish-speaking countries and Hispanic communities around the world celebrate the quinceañera, a religious and social event observed when a girl turns 15. The ritual symbolizes the transition from childhood to womanhood. The party includes dancing, food and music and ends with a father replacing his daughter’s flat-soled shoes with high heels.
The fashion show headlined a day of activities related to Hispanic culture and tradition, with food, retail and jewelry. Performances from Ballet Folklorico Mexico 2000 and the Latin Boys Cadets added to the festivities.
