A couple of stray dogs had been running around in the greenbelt behind Greenville Avenue, and the owners of Sunshine Miniature Trees felt for them. Even though the dogs were wary of people, they would come up and eat food left out for them.
No one could catch the dogs. But after a while, it became clear that the female was pregnant, and eventually, she had puppies under the Sunshine building. Animal Allies of Texas stepped in and discovered there were eight puppies.
Volunteers lured six puppies out from under the building and took them to Metro Paws Animal Hospital.
“These poor pups were so covered with fleas that they were anemic,” volunteer Lou Ann Norman says. “Tummies bloated with intestinal parasites — they wouldn’t have lasted much longer out on their own.”
Volunteers eventually captured the other two puppies, and they used them to lure the mother dog, whom they named Annabell. Here’s a picture of her:
Annabell tested positive for heart worms; she is being treated for that, and has been placed with a foster family. Finally, volunteers used Annabell and the puppies as bait to lure the papa dog, Jack.

All eight puppies have been placed with foster families, but they still need permanent homes, and so do Annabell and Jack.
