The White Rock Lake Foundation and For The Love of the Lake will host White Rock Lake Centennial Champions, presented to all area high school, middle and grade school students at the beginning of the spring 2011 semester. The event is a fundraising contest for the White Rock Lake Centennial Celebration to garner awareness of the White Rock Lake’s needs. Students who raise the most money will receive medals at the Grand Finale Beach Party June 25. The contest begins Tuesday, Jan. 4, from 9 a.m.-noon.
Jose Vargas and the Bath House Cultural Center are calling for visual artists to submit entries for the 17th annual El Corazon Exhibition. Mark Painter, who leads the outdoor science laboratory and garden program at Stonewall Jackson Elementary, received the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award in November. Under Painter’s leadership, the Stonewall Garden has endured 15 years despite losing all Dallas ISD funding in 2008. stonewallgardens.com.
Woodrow Wilson High School offers Zumba classes 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the boys gym, 100 S. Glasgow. The class costs $2, and 60 cents from every fee benefits a school fund. For information, call 972.502.4400.

Advocate photographer Benjamin Hager’s photos were selected to be part of the “Trashing our Treasure” photography exhibit, which opens this month at the Bath House Cultural Center’s White Rock Museum, 521 E. Lawther.
Karen Blessen, a Pulitzer Prize-winning neighborhood artist, recently received more recognition for her work featured on the cover of the Dallas Observer. The newspaper awarded her a $2,000 MasterMind grant for her efforts to bring art to schoolchildren. Blessen illustrated the Advocate’s September 2005 cover on the Emerald Isle high-rise, the October 2007 cover on the Trinity referendum, and the October 2009 cover on the Dallas landfill.
