Lakewood Minyard Construction Begins Dec. 1
Expansion of the Minyard Food Store at Abrams and Gaston is scheduled to begin Dec. 1, according to David Hardin, Minyard real estate representative.
Although construction on the grocery store will not begin until shortly after Jan. 1, demolition of the building housing Centennial Liquors, Fishburn’s Cleaners and Ice Cream on the Rocks will begin Dec. 1, Hardin says. The former Southwest Savings building and the Rucker Insurance building, both located at Richmond and Gaston, also are scheduled for demolition beginning Dec. 1.
Projected completion date of the construction is Thanksgiving 1993, Hardin says.
The $1 million expansion will increase the existing store’s size by 70 percent to 42,710 square feet, Hardin says. Additions will include a fresh fish counter and a full-service deli and bakery, he says.
The store will remain open throughout the construction, Hardin says.
Ice Cream on the Rocks owner Jim Cook says he hasn’t identified a new location and plans to take the winter off before making a decision. Plans also are uncertain for the other affected businesses.
Chamber Hosts Wellness Fair
The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a “Wellness Fair” from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the chamber offices, 9534 Losa Drive.
Medical personnel will provide blood pressure checks, cholesterol counts, glucose (blood sugar) checks, and hearing and vision tests. Cost is $5 per attendee.

Baylor Breaks Ground on New Pediatric Center
Baylor’s $3.2 million Pediatric Center for Restorative Care is under construction, according to Baylor spokesmen. The center, located at Hall Street and Swiss Avenue, is the first facility of its kind in the Southwest to care for premature, technology-dependent and chronically ill children.
Up to 1,500 children in the Dallas area could benefit from the center annually, according to spokesman Lisa Wren.
The center is designed to care for babies not well enough to be cared for at home, but not sick enough to remain in an acute-care hospital setting, says Robert Kramer, co-medical director of the center and Baylor’s chief of pediatrics.

Area Designers Sponsor Project to Benefit Needy
Local members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Dallas Association are working with Promise House, the YMCA Case Shelter and the St. Joseph Youth Center to develop positive living environments for the needy, according to ASID’s Beth Boston.
Donations include paint, furniture, blinds, shower curtains and plants, as well as the time and talent of the interior designers, Boston says. The donations are used in living units to help homeless youth make the transition to independent adulthood, Boston says. The homes being furnished are located in South Dallas and are leased from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Among the neighborhood residents involved in the project are Boston, Ed Frerichs, Floyd Davenport, Loren Sanders, Sandra Tingley, Marilyn Learning, Linda Steinberg, W. Charles Lee, Karen Gaither and Pat Pokladnik.

BANKER HONORED: Michaux Nash Jr. recently received the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award at a White House ceremony. Nash, who is chairman of Eastpark National Bank, was nominated for the award by Rep. Sam Johnson.
