I have received many calls and letters expressing concern about the fate of White Rock Lake. I want to take this opportunity to update you about the Lake and inform you of a very important meeting.

First of all, please rest assured that as the Council member whose district includes White Rock Lake, this crucial matter has been my top priority since my initial election to office in 1989.

Since that time, I have been working diligently to have White Rock Lake included as an item on the next bond election, which is scheduled for May 1995.

Properly dredging the Lake and providing for sedimentation control and watershed management will require several million dollars. However, there has to be enough interest shown by Dallas citizens to even get this project included on the 1995 Bond Program.

Therefore, those of us who are concerned about the future of our Lake must work hard to convince the other Council members to include it on the ballot. Then we must convince voters in other areas of Dallas to vote yes for this item in May.

The Council began its deliberation on the bond election in November and will formally adopt the ballot measure in February or March.

During the next five to six weeks, all Council members will conduct public meetings about the 1995 bond program. We want to receive citizen input on the items to be included on the ballot.

Council representative Donna Halstead and I will host a meeting Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Lake Highlands High School, 9449 Church Road between Skillman and Audelia.

If you cannot attend, Councilmen Chris Luna and Craig McDaniel will host a meeting Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson High School, 100 S. Glasgow.

If you believe the preservation and restoration of White Rock Lake should be our number-one priority, I urge you to attend this meeting and invite others with the same concern.

Public input will be critical in this process.
