J. William Brown, who came to Woodrow in 1952 to teach math, calculus and trigonometry, has broken his hip twice and is trying to recover.

Brown was sponsor of the famous senior publication at Woodrow. He took the position from the late Bush Morgan, who was its sponsor from the school’s opening in 1928.

“J. Willy” always had a sly sense of humor and could sometimes be persuaded to pose for silly pictures with the “Pub” staff.

He has been a regular at many Woodrow functions since he retired five years ago. I’m sure his jovial attitude will help him weather his current situation. But get-well cards wouldn’t hurt. Send them to the address below, and we will forward them.

More good wishes and cards are needed for English teacher Marlene Mallewick, who has taken a sick leave and is no doubt polishing up on Edgar Allen Poe.

Jamie Peavy, ’87, captured the hearts of North Texans when she survived a crash that left her pinned in her pickup for several days on an unmarked D/FW Airport road. She was a fan at the Wildcat’s last football game. She also is a Cowboy fan and was pinned in her vehicle during the Jimmy Johnson/Jerry Jones/Barry Switzer soap opera.

Apparently, her first question when rescued was “What happened?”

Simmons Blasts Off, Moranz Orbits the Dance Floor

Cynthia Simmons Whisennand, ’75, who is director of Library and Media Services for Lively Elementary School in Irving, was chosen to participate in the NASA Educational Workshop for Elementary Teachers at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

And that is Woodrow grad Brad Moranz and wife Jenny doing the Fred and Ginger routine in the current George Lucas movie “Radioland Murders.”

They also appeared in the November NBC movie “Margaret.” Other appearances include the national (not Woodrow) productions of “42nd Street” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”

The Law of the North

Alumnus Joe Kane Sholden, ’38, has been in the hospital lately. He is the proud father of newly elected Dallas County Justice of the Peace John Sholden, ’79. John received 86 percent of the vote in the Garland area district.

“He’ll be the law north of the Trinity,” Joe says.

The Wildcats Sweep the Polls

John was just one of many alumni who were elected to various positions last month. In fact, I don’t know of any Woodrow candidates who lost.

Sam Johnson, ’48, Woodrow’s fourth U.S. Congressman, was re-elected with 91 percent of the vote. Judge Mike Schwille was re-elected, as was ex-Woodrow parent Fletcher Freeman. Newly elected judges are Henry “Hank” Wade Jr. and Vic Cunningham, ’80.

Ex-Woodrow parent and School Board member Harryette Ehrhardt was elected to the Texas State House. Her campaign staffers included her five children, all of whom graduated from Woodrow. Even Taffy Ehrhardt Nelson, ’77, flew in from San Antonio for the day.

Her sister, Dr. Lynn Ehrhardt, ’78, also was busy. She and husband Michael O’Neal just had a 10 pound, 9 ounce baby boy, Joseph M. O’Neal. A True Fan.
