How much more democratic can we get than 13 people running for mayor? It would be nice if most of them weren’t male, middle-aged Anglo business types, but I’m not complaining. (Although I will miss Larry Duncan’s presence.)

What makes this race so terrific is that there is a much better chance to hear the issues discussed, given the number of candidates. With just two or three, everyone would stick to their talking points and answer every question with, "Well, I’m glad you asked that," and then launch into some boilerplate reply. Given 13 candidates, everyone should be scrambling to sound different from everyone else, and so might actually say something intelligent. Or revealing, which will be just as much fun.
