Lakewood Shopping Center is hosting a block party this month, inviting neighbors to help create the new community mural.
The party, scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sept. 18, will include food samples, games, giveaways, music and more.
Dallas-based artist Mari Pohlman is behind the mural, which was inspired by the sunsets at White Rock Lake. It also features the shopping center’s new logo and is painted on the outside of CVS.
Pohlman, who lives in Deep Ellum, worked with Alec DeJesus to paint the 100-feet-wide mural over a span of eight days. Maryland-based First Washington Realty, which acquired the property in 2019, wanted the mural to have a lake theme.
The commercial real estate firm, which also owns Lake Highlands Town Center, commissioned several other murals to Pohlman. One is the community mural, which will be completed at the block party. It will be 80 feet wide. Pohlman will sketch an outline of the word “Lakewood,” and neighbors will paint colorful brushstrokes to fill in the word.
Starting next week, Pohlman will begin work on another mural near Liberty Burger. She was given more creative freedom with it, and she plans to create a nature scene with plants, flowers, insects and butterflies.
Lakewood Shopping Center has undergone many changes over the years. The most recent tenants who have set up shop there include Fajita Pete’s and Freeze Cryotherapy.
