With a grand re-opening promised by mid-winter following the completion of a major renovation, the Lakewood Minyard store is planning to become a full-service supermarket.

True, the Minyard Food Store at Gaston Avenue and Abrams Road is well-stocked and accepts major credit cards.

It’s also true that by simply dialing 691-4529 and paying a flat fee of $7.50, you can arrange for Minyard to deliver groceries to your kitchen counter. So what more could a grocer offer?

“Fresh-baked goods made daily in our new bakery,” says store manager Russell Plunk, asking rhetorically: “Won’t it be wonderful to walk into the store and smell the fresh bread baking?”

Store remodeling began in January, after Minyard finally acquired adjacent property necessary to carry out the project, as first reported in the Advocate.

“The plans call for a 17,400-square-foot expansion, increasing the store’s size by 75 percent,” says Angie Drake of the Minyard corporate office in Coppell. The store’s operation and hours will be uninterrupted, she says.

“Every aspect of the store will be affected” for the better, says Plunk, “by expanding all departments, widening aisles and enlarging checkout areas, with floor-to-ceiling remodeling.”

In addition to opening a full-service bakery, Minyard will add a meat market for special cuts, with a seafood counter to be restocked daily.

An island-style deli will provide seating for 32 people with an adjacent salad and coffee bar offering fresh brews in several flavors.

New video and floral departments are included in the expansion, along with a customer-service section offering cameras, film, tobacco and an array of small appliances.

The supermarket also is receiving a new storefront, additional parking, improved security lighting and landscaping.

“Because Lakewood is a planned community and historic district, Minyard must meet certain landscaping codes,” Plunk says. “We’ll meet those codes with gardens of trees and shrubs, and street lamps along the sidewalks.

“Minyard’s goal is to give our customers the best service and product possible because Lakewood is a very special neighborhood with special customers,” Plunk says.
