East Dallas recording company Idol Records has two new releases to tickle our musical fancies: “Under the Undertow” by Here Holy Spain, and “Slow and Gold” by Descender, and they’re celebrating with a split vinyl LP release party tomorrow night.
Here Holy Spain is “a band with solid chops and memorable hooks, not looking to be another cookie cutter radio-rock lemming, but also not ignoring the heavy riffs that inspired them to thrash it out in the first place,” according to the press release. You won’t hear a banjo or a faux English accent in their songs, they say. And “not a chance” for a dubstep drop.
Descender on the other hand, “rises from the murk of ‘Dark Water,’ and fiercely rips a jagged hole through the sky with the intro track ‘Silver Lightning,'” the press release says. (I have no idea what that means, but it sounds violent.) “Standard song structure takes a back seat to a loping, frenetic riff made solid by Gruber and Hess with their distinctive twin Les Paul assault. Artillery shell bombast drumming by Duncan Black, Zack Busby’s sinewy fuzz bass, and Hess’ slithering high to wary romantic low give the track a lupine propulsion.”
In other words, check out these sound clips:
You can’t listen to “Under the Undertow,” but you can stream a sampling of Here Holy Spain’s music with “Way Out One in Five.”
And you can hear Descender’s single “Spinning on the Surface” to get a taste for their style.
If you love what you hear, the bands are celebrating the release of their new Idol Records split vinyl LP tomorrow (Saturday, July 27) at Three Links in Deep Ellum. Legendary North Texas bands Brutal Juice and Bobgoblin will also be on the bill. Doors open at 8 p.m. Here Holy Spain will kick things off at around 9 p.m., followed by Descender, Bobgoblin and Brutal Juice.
