In one sense, the news last week that another part of East Dallas’ history is going to be torn down isn’t surprising. A city that will allow the demolition of something as magnificent as the old Dr Pepper plant on Mockingbird to make room for a grocery store will stand for pretty much anything. But it’s still galling that the 85-year-old YWCA building on Haskell is going to go so someone can build a medical rehab center.
And I’m not sure why we let this happen. Do historic buildings just bore us? Are we so concerned with making money that anything goes in our pursuit of cash? Is it a lack of a sense of place, given that so many of us are from somewhere else? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
