Update: Lincoln announced the clock is not gone for good, but being repaired
You know the clock above Dixie House in the Lakewood Shopping Center that has been there for as long as any of us can remember? Lincoln Property Company had it taken down this morning, and it’s the last we’ll see of it in East Dallas.
A couple guys from Legacy National Sign Inc. came out to dismantle it so Lincoln’s construction crews can continue to reface the building.
Donovan Lambert, a master sign electrician with Legacy, said they’ll take the pieces back to the Legacy headquarters in Grand Prairie where his boss, Nathan Lohri, will reassemble it and put it in a sign museum in Grand Prairie.
“We saved all the pieces, as much of the original as we could,” Lambert says.
“Taking this sign down, it was a little heartbreaking,” he says. “Some signs I like taking down for the greater good, but this one… it was put up, when, the 1950s?”
“It’s a shame (Lincoln) can’t have it put back up,” says neighbor Lottie Minick, who was there this morning when Legacy was taking the sign down. “It’s been there as long as I can remember, and I know Lincoln could afford to have it put back up.”
Lambert says Lohri is a sign collector whose museum is home to dozens of historic signs from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
