A few weeks ago, the Ferguson Road Initiative held a big breakfast rally to celebrate its accomplishments, specifically through its weed-and-seed program, which we wrote about last year.

The event, hosted by Highland Park Cafeteria in Casa Linda, was impressive, attended by Mayor Mike Rawlings, Chief of Police David Brown, Northeast Deputy Chief Gloria Perez, U.S. Attorney Sarah Saldaña and about 200 or so other people who support FRIs efforts. And why not? The organization has reduced crime, improved the landscape and become a model for other area improvement efforts.

Ferguson Road Initiative leaders Nov.9 announced the end of the Weed and Seed program and the beginning of Community Connection, a new campaign that will enlist the monetary support and/or involvement of local businesses and individuals. There are myriad ways to participate ranging from $0 memberships to $10,000 Community Connection Founder’s Circle sponsorships with varying benefits that you can read about here. And right now, just signing up for their newsletter gets you a free week at the White Rock YMCA (and who can’t use that this pumpkin-pie time of year, am I right?)

The inaugural Community Connection event is happening Thursday, from 5-7 p.m. at Cafe Lago, 9219 Garland.  Say organizers, “We want to strengthen and empower the good businesses located in far East Dallas and the businesses that serve us … Community Connection is a great way to do that … connect with your business friends and neighbors and at the same time help one of our partner nonprofit agencies, Nexus Recovery Center.”

Bring a new or gently used women’s coat, sweater, jacket (any size), new undergarments (any size), or toiletries to support women who are recovering from addiction.

There will be snacks provided by big time FRI supporter Cafe Lago and a cash bar. Remarks begin at 6 p.m.
