In a world of assembly lines, sometimes skills like calligraphy, flower arrangement, cake decorating and embroidery can seem like dying arts, neighbor Tarin Holcomb points out on her website.

Holcomb, along with her friend Jessica Shain, recently co-founded Fullosophie, which features a series of classes designed to help Dallasites get back to the basics through hands-on creation.

“We wanted to do something a little different and offer something that’s not really being offered other places, kind of non-traditional,” Holcomb explains.

The classes are held at various venues around town — restaurants or bars, art studios, coffee shops — including several locations in East Dallas. Coming up, Fullosophies will host a calligraphy class at Chicken Scratch, a floral design class at The Southern Table, an abstract art class at the Willow Street Agency in Deep Ellum, and a floral design class at Stems of Dallas in Knox/Henderson area, and others. For most classes, snacks and drinks are provided, although some are BYOB.

Fullosophies partners with artisans and hobbyists who teach the classes. Classes last anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the material being covered, and cost from $50-$300. In order to keep the classes small and personal, they cap them between eight to 20 people, so sign up in advance online.

Holcomb originally grew up in Chicago before going to law school and moving to Dallas to practice law. It didn’t take long for her to figure out law wasn’t her cup of tea, so she and her friend, Shain, decided to create Fullosophies together. They started in 2012, focusing primarily on food and lifestyle. Shain eventually moved to San Francisco, where she launched another branch of the program. Then about a month ago they launched the classes.
