Dallas’ next mayor could be someone from our neighborhood. In Saturday’s election, Forest Hills resident and state Rep. Eric Johnson qualified for a runoff with City Council member Scott Griggs.

Johnson finished first with 20 percent of the vote, and Griggs made the next round with 18 percent of the vote. Both hope to replace term-limited Mike Rawlings in the June 8 runoff.

At his election party, Johnson thanked supporters and said he’d be hitting the campaign trail Sunday morning.

“Let’s do this one for Dallas,” he said.

Johnson, a Dallas Democrat, has served in the Texas legislature since 2010 representing the city’s 100th district. The district includes parts of East Dallas, West Dallas, South Dallas and Mesquite.

While serving as representative, Johnson advocated for the Garland-Gaston-Grand intersection redesign and the removal of a historically inaccurate plaque about the Confederacy in the Texas Capitol.
