Bishop Lynch High School has received a million dollar gift from the Catholic Foundation to help launch Phase II of their ongoing capital campaign. It is only the third time in the Foundation’s history to give a gift of this size. Funds will be used to build the Catholic Foundation Performing Arts Center, which will include a performance hall, black box theater, band and choir practice facilities, a chapel and a food court.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR. Philis Knox is Woodrow Wilson High School Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001. Mrs. Knox teaches computer systems is a member of the Campus Instructional Leadership Team, and is team leader for the business education department. She is an East Dallas resident, past PTA president of Alex Sanger Elementary and a Texas Life Member of PTA.

Julian Gilliatt, a 4th grade student at Stonewall Jackson Elementary, received a Gold Medal for his first place finish in Gyoroogi (Sparring) at the U.S. Junior National Tae Kwon Do Championships in San Antonio in July. Julian’s other accomplishments include Gold Medals at the 1999 Fort Worth Tae Kwon do Championships, 200 Texas Invitational Tai Kwon Do Championships and the 2000 Texas State Tae Kwon Do Championships. He competes with Master Johnny Lewis.

Travis Willingham, a 1999 graduate of Woodrow and TCU freshman, recently received Best Actor Award for his performance in Anton Chekhov’s play “The Bear” in Togliatti, Russia. The award was presented by the Russian Minister of Culture at the First International classic Russian Playwrights Festival on the Volga. TCU was the only American university theater department invited to the festival.

MEETINGS & PROGRAMS

The Feast of St. Francis Outdoor Eucharist and Blessing of the Animals is Sunday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m., at the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral (Ross @ Henderson). Bring your dog, cat or canary to this celebration of communion. Following the event refreshments along with doggie biscuits, pet pictures and kid crafts will be provided. Airedale Agenda. Anyone interested in giving a second chance to a homeless Airedale in need, please contact the Texas Airedale Rescue & Adoption organization for an adoption or foster application, 214-352-9292. This neighborhood all-volunteer, non-profit group is dedicated to rescuing Airedales and placing them with loving families after temperament evaluation, grooming, spay/neuter, heart worm and fecal check and vaccinations.

North Texas Boston Terrier Club, Inc. is a non-profit group with several neighborhood members that gives abandoned, abused and homeless pure breed Boston Terriers a second chance for a good life. The Lakewood Branch Library welcomes Mary Ann Kitchens as their new manager.

Lakewood resident, Rex Hudson has joined the Dallas Arboretum as Art Director. He was formerly a graphic artist for Northwest Bible Church in Dallas for five years.

Neighborhood pastel artist Niki Gulley was recently accepted in two juried art festivals to be held this fall. You can view Gulley’s work at the upcoming Cottonwood Art Festival, Oct. 7-8 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  at Beltline and Coit in Richardson. Gulley was also accepted in her first Museum Show “Texas Artists Museum Gulf Coast National Art Competition” with her new work “Fall Color.” This will be on display in October in Port Arthur. Gulley’s work is also exhibited at The Enchanted Gallery in Preston Center, Southern Star Gallery in Frisco, and the Legacy Gallery in Rockwall.
