Lone Star Comedy, local improvisational comedy troupe, opens in its new home on lower Greenville on July 13, 1802A Greenville Ave., with Upstaged! Smart Comedy, Smart Cocktails. Audiences can experience performances on a live stage as well as on video monitors throughout the space. Theatre Showcase. Nine Dallas theatre companies will gather at the Bath House Cultural Center at 521East Lawther Dr., July 7 through 29. They will present a festival of diverse productions during the Second Annual Festival of Independent Theatres. Plays will be performed in rotating repertory Thursdays through Sundays. Each block includes productions from two or three theatres. Admission is $30 per pass to all nine productions or $10 per block. Friday and Saturday night shows are $12. Cool Thursdays. It’s back to the scenic Arboretum for another summer of casual musical evenings through Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m., on the Camp Concert Lawn overlooking White Rock Lake. White Rock Lake Bird Watching Tours meet each Saturday morning at Casa Linda shopping Center in front of Chili’s at 8 a.m. sharp. From there the group will go to various places of birding interest around the lake for two to three hours. For information, call 214-823-9521.

Ridgewood/Belcher Recreation Center invites everyone to celebrate Independence Day from noon to 1:30 p.m. by bringing a picnic lunch and participating in the three-legged race, egg toss and much more. 20,000 Babes Beneath the Sea is another one of the Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s less-than-reverent stage offerings. The fourth in a trilogy by Leon Rain Award winning playwright Steve Lovett, the adventure runs through Aug. 12. Seating, food, and beverage service begins at 6:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. on Sundays) and shows begin at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. on Sundays). The Theater is located at 5400 E. Mockingbird, suite 119. Photo Retrospective. The Lakewood Library, 6121 Worth, will host an exhibit of photographs by Carl Sidle through July 15-Aug. 31. The well-known local artist tells a powerful story of the African American community in Dallas. For information, call 214-670-1376.

EDUCATION

Principal of the Day. When second grader Patrick Donovan served as “Principal of the Day” at St. Thomas Aquinas School this spring, he sent out a memorandum requesting that all teachers “please do not give out any homework.” Additionally Donovan asked the teachers to remind the students that he had declared the day of his service as principal to be a “color”(non uniform) day, in which the students could wear whatever they wanted.

DISD Scholarships. For the first year, DISD graduating seniors will receive scholarships from funds raised at the “Say Yes to Knowledge” gala and the Premiere DISD/General Superintendent Scholarship Golf Tournament; both events were sponsored by General Superintendent Bill Rojas. Neighborhood recipients include: Vy Nguyen, Luis Reyes, Alma Rivera and Amanda Womack, from Woodrow Wilson High School, and Dusty A. Bell, Vishakka Dewnani, Andrea Edwards, April Guadina and Shanna Jo Jones from Bryan Adams.

2000-2001 Sweetheart Captains. 2000-2001 Woodrow Wilson Drill Team Captains are Ruth Pendergrass, Valerie Richmond, Taylor Thompson, Kiley Crabb, Lane Worrall and Casey Brown.

Life member. Bryan Adams Parent Teacher Student Association awarded Jan Jones with a National Lifetime Membership.

UIL One-Act-Play Competition. For the second time in three years, the Woodrow One-Act-Play team advanced to the State UIL  One-Act-Play Tournament. Joining five other regional qualifiers and two at-large teams at the tournament in Austin, Woodrow’s performance of Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors” was the only comedy presented. State Tournament award winners were Davis Jackson as a member of the All-Star Cast and Jane Lilly for Honorable Mention All-Star Cast.

Off-to-College Reports. Jonathan Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gale Myers of East Dallas, was recently named to Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society at Texas A & M -Commerce. Myers is a junior criminal justice major and fulfilled all the requirements for acceptance into this honor society.

Another neighborhood resident, Sandra M. Trostle, a senior majoring anthropology and minoring in history is among 28 students who recently received the Dorothy Amann Award from the Division of Student Affairs at Southern Methodist University. This award goes to students for their contributions to the university and the Division of Student Affairs.

JUST FOR KIDS

Art Contest. Arts and Kids is please to announce that $38,000 in prizes and scholarships will be awarded this year through its Annual Art Competition. Students from the Dallas area, particularly beginners, are welcome to try to win their share of over 115 prizes. The deadline to enter is July 31. IN THE NEWS

Evening of Gratitude. C.C. Young Retirement Community recently honored community supporters, board members and staff during their “Evening of Gratitude” on May 3 at Southern Methodist University. Senator David Cain was named Advocate of the Year for his advocacy for older people. Both First United Methodist Church and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church received the Local Church Award for their ministry to residents.

Special Olympic Regatta. The Corinthian Sailing Club and the Texas Special Olympics teamed up on May 19, 20 and 21 for the first Texas Special Olympics sailing regatta and boat show. Club members hope this will be the first of many events for this special cause.

Architectural Achievement. Noted eclectic architect Richard Drummond Davis was recently recognized at the Dallas Preservation Society Year 2000 Achievement Awards for his design of the addition to the historic Normandy French home of Michael and Judy Shore on Lakewood Boulevard.
