GOOD CAUSES
Save the Community Gardens. For the past 10 years, the Community Gardens at Fitzhugh and Bryan have been a part of our neighborhood — enriching our environment and providing sustenance to the large Cambodian population in the area. Maybe you buy vegetables grown in the Garden’s rich soil, and you probably never miss their annual plant sale. But now the Garden is facing severe financial difficulty, and its loss will be a loss for our community. EDUCATION
Math Competition. SCHOOL teams recently competed at the Science and Engineering Magnet. The 7th grade number sense and science teams placed first; the 8th grade number sense, math and science teams placed first; the 7th grade calculator and math teams were second; the 8th grade calculator and math teams were second. Overall, adding all contests, the 7th grade team was second, the 8th grade team was first, and the combined 7th and 8th grade team won the first place sweepstakes trophy. Writing Honor. 1999 Woodrow graduate Jadranka Poljak was named with four other Texas journalism students as “one of the top scholastic writers of the decade” by UIL Academic Director Bobby Hawthorne.
Photojournalism. Four Woodrow photojournalism students won awards from the Association of Texas Photography Instructor’s statewide contests. Senior Ashley Lindsey won first place in Beginning Color Sports, Sophomore Ty Halazse earned second place in Beginning Color Sports, Junior Tyler Wolfe won third place in Beginning Color Sports, and Senior Ryan Daume earned first place in Beginning Color Student Life.
Montessori Garden. What do you get when you combine school children eager to learn with a love of nature? The new Discovery Garden at White Rock Montessori School. The project was an extension of a Montessori education’s teaching of environmental awareness and stewardship of the earth. The master design for the new garden and environmental center includes native Texas plants, a hummingbird and butterfly garden, wildflowers, paths to roam, a covered observation area, garden art, a pond, a graduate garden and compost bins. The ground breaking took place in mid-November; student will be taught how to use organic gardening techniques that are “earth friendly” as the garden progresses.
ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
DVAC Exhibit. The Dallas Visual Art Center, 2801 Swiss, will be presenting “Queen of My Room: A Survey of Work by Julie Speed, 1989-1999” from Jan. 15 through March 15. Dallas Museum of Art. This month brings several opportunities for personal enrichment. On Jan. 13, 7 p.m., take in a lecture by Zahi Hawass, Undersecretary of State for the Giza Monuments, and learn about the remarkable discovery of 105 mummies, hailed as the greatest archaeological find in Egypt since King Tut’s tomb. On Jan. 20, 6 p.m., Michael Van Valkenburgh, a Harvard professor and leading landscape architect, has some information pertinent to Dallas’ Trinity River Project. And on Jan. 26, 7-9 p.m., DMA offers a creative writing workshop the explores parallels between the art of Georgia O’Keefe and the process of writing poetry.
