Thirst Quencher. Echo Theatre presents the Dallas premiere of Eve Ensler’s award-winning Lemonade April 13-29, at The Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E.Lawther Drive. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 pm. Two Saturday matinees of LEMONADE are scheduled for April 22 and 29 at 2:00pm. Audience members are advised that the play contains mature themes. Easter Concert. On Palm Sunday, April 16, 4 p.m., the NorthPark Presbyterian Church will perform the Easter sections of Handel’s Messiah. A small reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The church is located at 9555 North Central.

Karaoke Kontest. Celebrate National Karaoke Week on Tuesday, April 25 at 4 p.m. at the Lakewood Branch Library at 6121 Worth Street. EDUCATION

Academic Bowl.  For five weeks this summer, Michael Davis, Jr. from Lakehill preparatory School participated in the Jump Start  program at Mountain View College.  This program  prepares students who have completed 8th grade and entering 9th with courses in Geometry, Speech, Algebra and Biology.  Michael was the only 7th grader allowed to participate in Jump Start.  Students that perform well during the program are chosen to compete in an academic bowl at Texas A&M.  Michael competed in Biology and brought home a third place medal.

Degrees Earned.  Southern Methodist University’s December commencement ceremony awarded degrees to the following area residents.  Thomas Bergen Bakewell received a Master of Business Administration degree.  Helene Brashear received a Bachelor of Science degree.  Christie Leigh Bunch  received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  Amy Jo Coke received a Master of Science degree.  Todd M. Dupey received a Master of Business Administration degree.  Mark Francis Forward received a Master of Business Administration degree.  Lindsay Lauren Lee received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  James Lemon received a Master of Liberal Arts degree.  Chad Alan Lind received a Master of Business Administration degree.  Kevin H. Mantooth received a Master of Liberal Arts degree.  And Kristina Dorsey McMillen received a Master of Liberal Arts degree.

Winning Photo.  Woodrow Wilson High School senior Jenny Robbins won the Grand Prize in the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce Vision of Dallas Photography Contest.  The prize includes a $200 check and a jersey signed by the Dallas Stars.  Jenny’s winning photo was of people rowing on White Rock Lake at sunset.

Woodrow Open House. “Woodrow Wednesdays,” a series of community open houses, continues on April 5 at  Woodrow Wilson High School, 100 S. Glasgow. School tours and information will be provided by parents, students and staff from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the PTA and School Centered Education Council. Free Classes. The Dallas Area Parkinson Society’s free classes will be hosted by the Skillman Church of Christ, 3014 Skillman Street. New participants for instruction in speech and physical therapy can enroll now. Caregivers as well as those affected by the nerve disorder may attend. Each class is bilingual. The Skillman Church of Christ has provided facilities for Parkinsonism classes as a community service for the past 15 years. Call 214-823-2179 for details.

Good Reading. The Skillman Church of Christ, 3014 Skillman Street, invites anyone in the neighborhood to stop by the library and browse its shelves displaying the works of outstanding Christian writers of the 20th century including Max Lucado, C. S. Lewis, Charles Swindoll and R. C. Sproul. Books may be checked out, as well as books recorded on cassette or videotapes. This is good reading for all ages. Call 214-823-2179.

ATTENTION SENIORS

Adventures In Learning. The Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center announces the spring Semester of Adventures in Learning for senior adults March 31 through May 31. The stimulating classes, activities, and programs include square dancing, book reviews, language classes, and many more. One new program added to the extensive offerings is learning to create and produce a cable television program with the Center’s crew at Dallas Community Television. Participants bring a sack lunch as beverage and dessert are provided. Cost is $20 per full semester. Most classes are at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church located at 3204 Skillman Avenue. Tax Help. VITA tax help is free from the Lakewood Branch Library, 6121 Worth Street. Stop by on Saturday, April 8 and April 15 from 2-4 p.m. Handicapped, low-income, and senior patrons are served first, others as time permits. Preservation Awards. Preservation Dallas announced the honorees at the Preservation Achievement Awards Ceremony on Feb. 25 at the Lakewood Theater. The awards recognized outstanding work that related to the preservation and revitalization of Dallas’ historic buildings, neighborhoods and places. Lakewood/East Dallas was well represented among the honorees. In the category of Residential Restoration, the award went to Cliff and Donna Welch for their 1950s house on Waterford Drive. For Residential Rehabilitation, Pan American Capital Corporation for the Mitchell Lofts and the Continental Lofts as well as Post Properties for the Wilson Building. For New Construction in an Historic Context, the addition by Richard Drummond Davis to the Shore House in Lakewood and the addition by Kevin Moran to the Moran house in the Munger Place Historic District. New Construction by the Inner City Community Development Corporation in the Queen City Neighborhood was also awarded. For Non-residential Restoration, the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department was honored for the Tower Building at Fair Park.

Preservation Dallas also recognized the following individuals. The award for Outstanding Craftsmanship was presented to Richard Potter of Potter Art Petal Studios. For Stewardship, the award went to Henry S. Miller for Highland Park Village. The Pioneer Award for neighborhood revitalization went to Trey Bartosh and David Spence for their work in the Kidd Springs and Bishop Arts neighborhoods. The recipient of the Dorothy Savage Award was Dallas City Council member Veletta Forsythe Lill, which honors an individual for extraordinary work in the field of historic preservation. Congratulations to all these who have helped save our history.
