We wrote last year about the Lake Highlands dad who competed in the grueling and prestigious Western States 100-mile endurance race.

This year, another White Rock area resident took on and conquered the distance. Tim Steele, 41, who lives on Hillside in East Dallas, recently placed 203 among 360 of many of the most hardcore ultrarunners from around the world (20 countries, 40 states, according to Meredith Steele, who filled us in on the whole thing).

The world’s oldest 100-mile trail run, Western States takes runners from Squaw Valley, CA down 40,000 feet of the Granite Chief Wilderness and the deep canyons of the historic California Gold Country, then across the Middle Fork of the American River before finishing in Auburn, CA.

This was Steele’s first time to take on this distance. To heighten the stakes, temps rose to 102 degrees (second-hottest day in the event’s history), weather that can kill an ultrarunner without a strategic nutrition and hydration plan. A team of supporters, including past Dallas Running Club president Libby Jones, helped Steele execute said plans. Steele finished the race in 28 hours and 33 minutes.
