Tuesday ended primary season in Texas for the 2018 mid-term elections, and several neighbors were in the running to be on the ballot in November.
In Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, M-Streets neighbor Colin Allred won handily over Swiss Avenue native Lillian Salerno in the Democratic runoff for the right to face incumbent Pete Sessions in November. Allred tallied more 69 percent of the 21,828 voters. Allred is a Hillcrest High School graduate who played football at Baylor and in the NFL before becoming a civil rights lawyer and working in the Obama administration. Sessions has been in Congress since 1997 and has represented the 32nd district since 2003. Democrats hope to turn the district blue in 2018 because Hilary Clinton won it in 2016, but 41,359 Republicans and 40,084 Democrats voted in the March primary.
Just 4,005 voters participated in the Republican runoff for District 107 in the Texas House, where Deanna Metzger defeated Lakewood neighbor Joe Ruzicka with just more than 56 percent of the vote. Metzger will take on incumbent Victoria Neave in November.
East Dallas neighbor Vickers Cunningham lost the Republican runoff for county commissioner against J.J. Koch by just 25 votes after making national news for an irrevocable trust he put in place in 2010 for his children stating that his children would receive a disbursement of money if they married a spouse who was straight, white and Christian.
