If it seems like it’s been raining a lot recently, that’s because it has. Dallas-Fort Worth received 7.77 inches of rain last month alone.

In our neighborhood, rain often reveals the many potholes and other road issues that can cause car damage or, at the very least, frustrated drivers. (Porky the pig alerts the City of those pesky potholes.)

Decades ago, however, heavy precipitation brought flooding and more serious destruction to specific areas, such as Old East Dallas. For example, in April 1991, Dallas’ firefighters had to rescue some neighbors trapped along roads that flooded. In that month, DFW received 3.63 inches of rain.

When finished, the Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel should provide 100-year flood protection for our neighborhood. Go here to see a progress update on construction.
