My dog is a wild one. She did not like the parking lot, the waiting room or getting on the scale at A&B Animal Clinic near White Rock Lake—oh, how she would whine and moan and sometimes lash out at any poor cat that happened to be in the vicinity —but as soon as Dr. Ahumada entered the room, she’d nuzzle up to him and calm down.

For his St. Francisian ways with animals and his willingness to hold long conversations about animal biology [should you be interested in that sort of thing], and his straightforward approach to tough situations such as incurable canine illnesses, Ahumada has been my family’s vet for many years, attending to myriad fur-coated family members. Often I’ve seen birds, pigs and other atypical animals in his waiting room.

“People all over Dallas would bring him birds they found that were sick or had a broken wing,” his son Ian told the Dallas Morning News. “He loved animals and wanted to help the community. He would take in all sorts of animals, even opossum. He used the clinic’s resources to help because he loved all animals.”

Dr. Ahumada died recently from a long illness, according to his obituary; his funeral was held yesterday at nearby St. Bernard church. He leaves behind wife Dr. Helene Bergeron [also a vet], Ian, his other son Marc-Pierre, mother Lucila, sisters Patricia Lippe and Christina and brother Robert.
