Supportive teachers are the foundation of a great education

The 2022-2023 school year is in full swing, and I have been thrilled to witness so many happy students returning to the classrooms. Lots of fun events are happening in District 2. From a Garden Work Day at Mockingbird Elementary, to Arthur Kramer elementary having a great spirit night at Torchy’s Tacos. After a long 2 years, it is exciting to see us coming together as a community again. In addition, I am excited that both Hillcrest and Woodrow had successful homecoming celebrations. What an exciting time of the year. Wildcat and Panther pride runs loud and proud!

Discover Dallas ISD

Dallas ISD is home to amazing schools that offer lots of opportunities. We are proud to showcase these schools and opportunities at our upcoming fair, Discover. Discover will be held on Saturday, November 5 at Adamson High School from 9 am- 1 pm. The types of schools you can explore at the event include: early learning opportunities, single-gender schools, STEM/STEAM schools, Montessori schools, dual language programs, visual and performing arts schools, P-Tech, transformation schools, personalized learning schools, talented and gifted schools, career institutes, and project based learning schools. All of these schools are available to DISD students free of charge. I encourage you to come explore your opportunities.

TEI scorecards are back

Almost 40% of teachers move up more than one effectiveness level.

After a pause in Teacher Excellence Initiative scorecards because of the pandemic, 9,225 Dallas ISD teachers recently received their 2022-2023 scorecards.

Dallas ISD adjusted scorecard rules to make up for the interruption, including the ability to move up more than one effectiveness level. Overall, more than 65% earned a Proficient I or higher effectiveness level. Because teacher salaries are determined by effectiveness levels, this jump meant significant increases for teachers. Dallas ISD is proud to be home to so many incredible teachers.

Pursuing innovation

The Junior League of Dallas and Texas Instruments awarded 52 Dallas ISD educators grants of up to $2,500 each through the annual Grants for Innovative Teaching program. In total, nearly $113,000 in funds were distributed for deserving educators’ winning projects addressing reading and literacy enrichment, diversity, special education, STEM or arts and culture enrichment across one or more grade levels.

District 2 winners include John J. Pershing’s Maria Fernandez-Gutierrez, K. B. Polk Center for Academically Talented and Gifted’s Deborah Tubbs, Benjamin Franklin International Exploratory Academy’s Efrain Rivera, and Hillcrest High School’s Ward Coats.
