Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law offers free one-hour tax consultations for anyone who can’t afford attorney services and is facing an IRS audit, appeal or collection process; involved in innocent spouse relief; or needing to resolve a past-due tax matter. Lakewood Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) needs neighbors to join the program. While on patrol, volunteers observe and report suspicious behavior to the Dallas Police. The program is non-confrontational in nature. It requires a minimum of two hours a week tailored to each volunteer’s schedule. EDUCATION

The Greenville Avenue Area Business Association will award three scholarships to Dallas ISD high school seniors. Students graduating from Emmett J. Conrad, North Dallas and Woodrow Wilson high schools are eligible to win a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice. Students must show financial need, and must have applied to a college or university prior to filing the scholarship application. Applications are available from Dallas ISD school counselors at the three schools, or online at dallasisd.org. All scholarship applications must be postmarked by Thursday, March 12. Finalists will be interviewed in April and the scholarship winners will be announced in May.

The Woodrow Wilson High School PTA is seeking alumni donations for college scholarships. Seniors who have not received more than $5,000 from other scholarship sources will be eligible for this PTA scholarship. Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible donation can mail it to Woodrow Wilson PTA, 100 S. Glasgow, Dallas, TX 75214. Woodrow alums are asked to write their graduation year and “PTA Scholarship Fund” on the memo line of the check. Donations can also be made online at woodrowwildcats.org. Rev. Dr. Daniel Chesney Kanter, Lakewood resident, has been named senior minister at First Unitarian Church of Dallas. Kanter, a recent doctoral graduate of SMU Perkins School of Theology, has served as second minister at the church since 2003.

Dr. Joerg Rieger, Wendland-Cook professor of constructive theology at SMU Perkins School of Theology, recently was featured on National Public Radio’s weekly radio program, “Religion & Ethics News Weekly”. The program focused on whether the United States can be defined as an empire in either a traditional or modern sense, citing his monograph, “Christ and Empire”, and his co-edited collection of essays, “Empire and the Christian Tradition.” In addition to teaching, Rieger is also serving as Theologian in Residence at the First United Methodist Church of Boulder, Colo.
