Dallas police have determined that less crime occurs under the watchful lenses of surveillance cameras — no surprise there. A brief issued at a Public Safety Committee meeting today included a map pinpointing current and future cameras around town. Included in the plan for future cameras is White Rock Lake.

The White Rock Lake Conservancy has been raising funds for the lake area portion of this surveillance camera plan, but though groups such as the conservancy fund the cameras, the city must supply the man- or womanpower to monitor the feed.

Many area residents have pushed the surveillance project as an alternative or a supplement to the controversial lighting project. I wonder how much light you have to have in order for video to show up … I know, I know. Most of the car break-ins happen during the day anyway.

Here
and here and even here are some past Back Talk discussion related the proposed lake projects. I always thought, in theory, that cameras cameras everywhere all over our city would be a terrifying intrusive thing. That was before I had my car broken into. That was before my grandma was robbed in a parking lot in broad daylight. Now it just seems the lenses are the lesser of two evils, which is even more terrifying when you think about it.

As of yet, the city has not taken action on the camera plan.
