There’s no need to summarize the recent convictions in the city hall corruption trial here, other than to say that a lot of people appear headed to prison for quite awhile. But if you want to give some thought to what the convictions mean to the rest of us, read Jim Schutze’s Dallas Observer column about the trial, its fallout and its implications.

Schutze appears to be striking an optimistic tone here, and if you read his columns regularly you know how rarely that happens. But he has a point: What happened downtown was wrong, and the fact that a jury recognized it provides hope. It concerns me somewhat that I’m less optimistic than Schutze, but I’m just going to hope he turns out to be right on this one.
