Ten years ago, Cliff and Donna Welch decided to skip the lights and the Christmas tree. Before you call them the Grinch or Ebenezer Scrooge, relax. They decorated for the holiday — in an unconventional way.

On a panel outside their front door, Welch and his family unveiled a 9-foot graphic of Macaulay Culkin’s hands-on-face pose from the Christmas classic, “Home Alone.”

It soon became a popular spot for neighbors to pose for their Christmas cards. When residents started asking what image the Welches planned to display the following year, the tradition was born.

“We thought it’d be fun to do a large super graphic for Christmas instead of traditional decorations,” Welch said. “We do something that’s striking and unique, an iconic Christmas image.”

Over the years, the family has featured Buddy from “Elf,” Olaf from “Frozen” and Si Robertson from “Duck Dynasty.” But Welch’s favorite image was Jim Carrey from “The Grinch.”

“It looked like it should have been up for Halloween,” Welch said.

Friend Cathy Leonard of CTL Marketing has not only supplied the image for the last 10 years, she has been instrumental in advising the Welches on the installation.

The graphic goes up after Thanksgiving and is taken down around New Year’s. Look for it if you’re driving around Lake Park Estates or browse 10 years of Christmas images in our gallery.
