This morning, Channel 5 reported that there was a shooting at an East Dallas pawnshop. Oh no, I thought, someone has been shot at the pawnshop at Greenville and Ross. Turns out the pawnshop was actually in South Dallas, on MLK between Lamar and Ervay.

This sort of geographic mistake happens with surprising regularity, both on the TV news and in Dallas’ Only Daily Newspaper (which seems especially confused about the location of Lake Highlands). Some of us at the Advocate have pondered the reasons for this in our spare time, and we’re not quite sure why it happens. Obviously, someone working for a news organization should know how to read a map. But apparently not.
