Marguerite Abston blew out the candles on her 100th birthday cake this week at her home near Austin, Texas.
The Austin American Statesman reports that Abston graduated high school at 15 and trained at John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth. She moved into what was then the brand new neighborhood of Casa Linda after serving as a nurse during World War II at a hospital in San Antonio. She met her husband, Jim, at the hospital when he fell ill while serving in the Philippines.
Abston continued nursing and raised her family near White Rock Lake. She now has two children, five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She attended White Rock United Methodist Church and enjoyed visiting the Arboretum during her time here in East Dallas.
When asked how she managed to live this long, Abston told the Statesman, “I didn’t try. It just happened.”
